Is my horse left- or right-handed?

Every horse is naturally left- or right-handed.

Below you will find a handy list of characteristics for a left- or right-handed horse. Your horse does not need to show all of these traits!

The right-handed horse:

    • The right side is the hollow side, and the left side is the bulge (convex) side.
    • The horse bends and travels easier to the right than to the left.
    • The horse takes a stronger hold of the left rein.
    • The saddle slips to the left.
    • The rider sits more to the left.
    • On a circle to the right, the horse tends to fall out over the outside shoulder and push its hindquarters inward.
    • On a circle to the left, the horse tends to fall in on the inside shoulder and push its hindquarters outward.
    • The right hip is positioned higher.
    • The horse tends to rush or accelerate when traveling to the left.
