Mounting from a block: prevent uneven strain on your horse
Accidents regularly happen during mounting because the horse refuses to stand still or moves off too soon.
To prevent this, you can teach your horse to stand politely during mounting and use a mounting block (also known as a mounting stool). Mounting from the ground places an enormous strain on the horse’s back, as your weight effectively doubles or even triples.
Imagine doing this five times a week and calculating that over an entire year; you can imagine what a one-sided strain this places on your horse.
If you decide to use a mounting block, it probably won’t happen overnight. Many horses need time to get used to the ‘scary’ stool at their own pace.
Take your time and build it up step-by-step until your horse is perfectly parked next to the block and you can mount without any issues.
This prevents many mounting problems and makes your horse more cooperative and obedient.
