The 6 steps to straighten your horse
Step 1: Lateral Flexion
Lateral flexion means getting the horse to bend evenly to both the left and the right. It is the most uniform and continuous lateral curve possible throughout the spine.
The circle is an excellent exercise for this; it stretches the short muscles and contracts the long muscles.
Step 2: Forward-Downward Extension
Through the lateral flexion in step 1, the horse begins to release its back. This allows the horse to lower its neck in a forward-downward direction.
Step 3: Stepping Under
Stepping under is crucial to enable the hind leg to bend in the subsequent three steps. The horse must step under with its inside hind leg toward its center of gravity.
Step 4: Bending of the Inside Hind Leg
The inside hind leg is made supple and flexible through the shoulder-in exercise.
Step 5: Bending of the Outside Hind Leg
The outside hind leg is made supple and flexible through the travers, renvers, and half-pass exercises.
Step 6: Bending of Both Hind Legs
Through the pirouette and piaffe exercises, both hind legs are made flexible. The weight-bearing hindquarters relieve the forehand.
