The horse skeleton explained

The function of the skeleton

The skeleton has multiple functions. The skeleton is a sturdy framework of bones and cartilage and gives shape to the body.

It provides the attachment point for muscles and tendons; the muscles can now provide movement for the skeleton.

The skeleton supports and protects organs such as the heart and lungs. Blood cells are also produced and stored, and it serves as a storage place for minerals.

The skeleton has a total of 252 bones.

The skeleton of the horse consists of:

– 7 cervical vertebrae

– 18 thoracic/back vertebrae

– 5-6 lumbar vertebrae

– 5 sacral vertebrae

– 15-21 caudal vertebrae
