The left and right seat
Many riders focus on steering with their reins to make a turn, but directing your horse actually starts within your seat. With your left and right seat, you determine whether your horse can achieve the correct lateral flexion.

Bending around your inside leg
When you sit correctly in a left seat on the left rein (and a right seat on the right rein), your horse can bend smoothly around your inside leg. Are you sitting against the movement? Then your horse cannot achieve the lateral flexion in the correct way.
The rider’s posture on the horse
-
- Shoulders over shoulders: Your shoulders must run parallel to your horse’s shoulders.
- Hips over hips: Your hips must align with your horse’s hips.
The moment you sit crookedly, your horse has to compensate, which often leads to imbalance.
Check yourself
Check whether you are sitting in a left or right seat during your ride, so your horse can easily adopt the correct lateral flexion.
