Working with the cavesson

When you start straightening your horse, the cavesson is a very useful tool.

The cavesson is made of leather and features three rings on the noseband for attaching the reins.

The middle ring is used for groundwork and lunging, while the outer rings are used for riding and work in hand.

The cavesson can be used for lunging, groundwork, work in hand, and riding—either in combination with a bit or perfectly fine as a bitless bridle.

The big advantage of working with a cavesson is that the horse’s mouth is ‘spared’.

In previous centuries, the cavesson was already used to train horses.

Nowadays, cavessons come in various designs. When purchasing a cavesson, make sure it is not too heavy and does not contain too much “iron”, as these cavessons are often stiff and heavy.
